This announcement is being advertised under delegated examining procedures and is open to all U.S. citizens. This position is also career-seasonal (Subject-To-Furlough) in nature and does not provide employment on a year-round basis. The Utility System Repairer-Operator performs all journey-level assignments associated with the operations and maintenance of the water treatment systems, wastewater treatment systems, reclaim water systems, and the water distribution systems and wastewater collection systems located throughout Grand Canyon National Park. Inherent in those assignments are the operations, flow configurations, monitoring, adjustments, preventive maintenance, and repair to all water treatment systems and to all wastewater treatment systems at the eight major developed areas within the park. Equipment and facilities associated with these water treatment systems and wastewater treatment systems includes South Rim WWTP, North Rim WWTP, Phantom Ranch WWTP, Desert View WWTP, Roaring Springs pumping station, Indian Garden pumping station, and the sewage collection systems and the potable water distribution systems located throughout the Grand Canyon National Park. The operator is expected to be completely experienced and familiar with the proper operations and the preventive and corrective maintenance requirements to all of these systems and equipment. The incumbent will perform all specialized and certified assignments associated with the operations, maintenance and repair to these public utilities systems in order to insure their compliant operation through a 365 day operation. Collateral duties will include pipeline repair, water haul operations, fuel operations, and occasional assignments to sanitation duties which are associated with pumper truck operations and chemical toilets maintenance.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Incumbent may frequently lift up to 50 pounds and at times life or move materials heavier than 100 pounds with help of other personnel or with the use of materials handling equipment. Will encounter hard physical labor in removing/replacing damaged sections of the pipeline. Will also require hiking long distances on steep trails in high heat conditions in order to arrive and to depart the assigned duty station or remote sites, and will require hiking to and from the pumping stations within the inner-canyon. Work requires considerable standing, stooping, bending, pulling, pushing, crawling and working in confined spaces.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work performed on the trans-canyon pipeline and on the North Rim water supply will require flying, hiking, climbing, hanging by ropes and restraint lines, may be exposed to temperatures that exceed 120 degrees F. Work will be both inside and outside of facilities and buildings. May be exposed to hazardous chemicals, gases, liquids and reagents, insect bites, bruises, cuts, falls, burns and scrapes.
AREA / HOUSING INFORMATION: This position is located at the North Rim of Grand Canyon National Park, which receives, approximately, 400,000 visitors betweenMay 15 and October 15. The North Rim Unit of Grand Canyon National Park is 215 miles fromGrand Canyon Village(4 hours by car). Elevation is 8000 feet, with temperatures ranging from -5 degrees in the winter to the mid-80's in the summer. During summer months, concession facilities are available, such as a restaurant, a small market, cabins and gas station. No schools are available near the North Rim. The nearest established community with a full range of services isKanab, Utah80 miles to the north.Permanent employees obtain housing either through a bid system or by assignment into shared furnished quarters.Because of limited housing, when an employees is assigned shared quarters, the park is not able to provide accommodations for family member and pets.For additional housing information contact the park Housing Office at .

QUALIFICATIONS : Applicants must be physically fit and must possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities of the elements listed in Section 25 of the Online Occupational Questionnaire to perform the duties of the position at the level for which they are applying. Requirements
1. If new to Federal Civil Service, you will be required to serve a probationary period of 1 year.
2. National Park Service (NPS) uniformed position. Employee will be required to wear a uniform and comply with NPS uniform standards. A uniform allowance will be provided to defray the cost of the uniform.
3. You will be required to operate a government (or private) motor vehicle as part of your official duties. Prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year thereafter (or more frequently if management determines such need exists), you will be required to sign an affidavit certifying to your possession of a valid State issued drivers license that is current and has not been revoked, suspended, canceled, or otherwise disqualified in any way to prohibit your operation of a motor vehicle. You will also submit a photocopy of your valid State issued drivers license prior to your first official motor vehicle operation, and again every year, or more frequently if management determines such need exists. Lastly, you may be required to submit (within a State sealed envelope or submitted directly by the State authorities), and at your own expense, all certified driving records from all States that discloses all valid drivers licenses, whether current or past, possessed by you.
